A total of 9 Korean athletes, including non-tournaments, participated in Season 2 of ‘Road to UFC’. They competed in the opening round of Season 2 of ‘Road to UFC’ at the UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai, China in May. As a result of the fierce competition, the Korean players who advanced to the semifinals are as follows.
In the flyweight class, Choi Seung-guk (26, Korean Zombie MMA), the ‘descendant of the Korean zombie’, competes. ‘Ant Hell’ Lee Chang-ho (29, Extreme Combat) will compete in the bantamweight division, and ‘No Problem’ Kim Sang-won (29, Korean Top Team) will compete in the featherweight division. In the lightweight division, ‘Steel Troop’ Kim Sang-wook (29, Havas MMA) will compete.
Also, in the non-tournament match, lightweight ‘Genius No. 1’ Park Jae-hyeon (21, Korean Zombie MMA) will participate. The non-tournament will determine whether or not to advance to the UFC with a one-match.
At an online press conference held on the 24th, Korean players reaffirmed their determination to compete.
‘Descendant of the Korean Zombie’ Choi Seung-guk will face Genius Yue (23, China) in the flyweight semi-finals.
Choi Seung-guk is one of the favorite students of ‘Korean Zombie’ Jeong Chan-sung. Choi Seung-guk, who played soccer until his sophomore year of high school, is famous for dreaming of becoming a martial artist after watching a video of Chan-sung Jeong’s match. He is a hard worker who went to gyms from Chuncheon, Gangwon-do to Seoul.
On this journey, the Korean Zombie MMA family is always together from training to the match. On the previous day (26th), Jeong Chan-seong (36), who played against Max Holloway (31, USA), and Choi Seung-woo (30), who played against Jarno Erens (28, Netherlands), played against Quilan Salkild (23, Australia) on the 27th. Even Park Jae-hyeon (21), who plays, is about to make a sortie.
When asked who worked the hardest in training, Choi Seung-guk said, “I think it will be difficult to choose all of them by preparing equally hard. I prepared for the match with (Choi) Seung-woo hyung, (Jung) Chan-seong hyung, and (Park) Jae-hyeon, and I did everything diligently. I think I got motivated from it and worked harder.”
Regarding whether Jung Chan-sung will play the second match in this confrontation, Choi Seung-guk said, “This time, I will not enter the second. Hong Joon-young and coach Ha Dong-ho look after the second.”
Opponent Genius Yue is the same teammate as Kiu Luan, whom Choi Seung-guk met in the semi-finals of Season 1 of ‘Road to UFC’ last time. At that time, Choi Seung-guk defeated Kiu Luan by unanimous decision in the third round.
Like Kiu Luan, Genius Yue is a left-handed fighter with a similar style. Regarding whether it will flow in a similar way to Ki Lueon, Choi Seung-guk said, “If it goes well, I think it will go that way (similar way)” and “I was in a hurry at the time. I was going to finish. So I think I will put pressure on the opponent while entering step by step while positioning so as not to be in a hurry.”
If you win this match, you will meet the winner of the match between Mark Klimako and Rei Tsuruya in the final. Choi Seung-guk said, “I don’t have a specific desire to fight anyone. Part of it was because I focused on the previous game, and since all three of the players coming up this time are left-handed, there won’t be much difference in preparation. I think I can focus on the match now, win it, and then think about it.”
Choi Seung-guk said, “First of all, I will reward you with a good game and fight without regret.” My hometown is Chuncheon, Gangwon-do, but I am thinking of the sea in Sokcho.”
