Boston has won two in a row after losing three straight to Miami.
The Boston Celtics defeated the Miami Heat 110-97 in Game 5 of the 2022-2023 NBA Eastern Conference Finals at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, on 26 February.
Jayson Tatum (21 points, eight rebounds, 11 assists), Jaylen Brown (21 points, two rebounds, three assists), Marcus Smart (23 points, three rebounds, two assists) and Derrick White (24 points, six three-pointers, three rebounds) led four players in double figures in the win. Boston took control of the game from the start, with Tatum and White at the centre of it all. They spearheaded the offence, combining for 23 of Boston’s 35 first-quarter points. Smart and Brown provided support from the perimeter. Add in an alley-oop from Grant Williams, and Boston led 35-20 at the break.
Boston’s momentum continued in the second quarter. Brown followed a three-pointer with a layup, and Al Horford drained a dunk. Miami fought back with Duncan Robinson and Jimmy Butler, but White and Smart hit 3-pointers. Brown and Robert Williams III also found the back of the net to make it a 61-44 halftime lead.
In the second half, Boston’s performance steadied. Horford and Brown hit dunks, and White nailed another outside shot. Butler and Bam Adebayo then gave up baskets, but they didn’t falter. Williams and Smart hit three-pointers before Tatum continued his scoring streak. When the third quarter ended, the score was 90-72, still in Boston’s favour.
The fourth quarter was no different. Boston continued to rack up points with Tatum, Brown, and White. Sensing victory early on, the Celtics brought their starters to the bench and relaxed to close out the game.
Meanwhile, Miami was unable to match Boston’s momentum, even though Butler (14 points, five rebounds, five assists) and Adebayo (16 points, eight rebounds, three assists) did their part. The loss sends the Heat into Game 6 under pressure.
