Sam Burns (USA) became the last champion of the World Golf Championship (WGC) Dell Technologies Match Play (total prize money of 20 million dollars).
On the 27th (Korean time), Burns defeated Cameron Young (USA) by 6 holes in the final of the tournament held at Austin Country Club (par 71) in Austin, Texas, USA to win the championship.
Since this tournament, which started in 1999, will not be held from next year, Burns will remain as the last ‘match king’.
This was his first appearance as Burns had never competed in this event until last year. He first competed in the last competition held and even won the championship.
He is the second player to win the tournament after Jeff Ogilvy (Australia) in 2006.
Burns rose to the heights of five wins on the PGA Tour in about 10 months after winning the Charles Schwab Challenge in May of last year.
Burns reported three consecutive wins from 2021.
Burns, who received the prize money of 3.5 million dollars (approximately 4.55 billion won), jumped from 15th to 10th in the world rankings.
Burns was more thrilled with the semi-final match in which she defeated defending champion and world number one Scotty Scheffler (USA) in overtime than in the final match where she defeated Young lightly.
Although he is close friends with Schaeffler, Burns, who said, “There is no concession in the game,” allowed Scheffler to extend the game after catching a birdie on the 18th hole (par 4), but hit the birdie on the 21st hole to advance to the final.
Burns said, “I got a feeling from the semifinals with Schaeffler. It continued into the finals.”
Burns played a one-sided match against Young, who reached the final by beating Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) in the semifinals.
Young seemed to take the lead by catching a birdie on the 2nd hole (par 4), but Burns overturned the game with 3 consecutive birdies on holes 4-6, followed by a birdie on the 8th hole, and then 4 consecutive birdies on holes 10-13. It was decided early.
Burns, who won seven matches, said, “I’m really tired, but I’m glad I got such a good result by stacking up good swings one by one.”
In the semifinals, Young, who caught a big fish called McIlroy and advanced to the finals to challenge for his first championship in his life, had to be satisfied with his sixth runner-up in his career.
Young bowed his head, saying, “It’s a bit embarrassing. I had to make a lot of birdies, but (in the final) I couldn’t.”
In the semifinals, Young had an extended match against McIlroy, who had been ahead but birdied on the 18th hole, and birdied on the 19th hole to decide the game.
Young received the runner-up prize money of 2.2 million dollars (approximately 2.85 billion won).
McIlroy defeated Schaeffler by two holes in the 3rd-4th place match, and relieved the regret of losing in the semifinals. 온라인카지노
McIlroy, who won the championship (2015), runner-up (2012), and placed 4th (2017) in this competition, left a record of trying all 1st to 4th places.
McIlroy’s victory in the match for 3rd and 4th places brought him closer to the record of most match wins (36 wins) held by Tiger Woods and Matt Kucher (USA) by two wins, but a new record is impossible as the tournament was abolished.
McIlroy said, “It’s unfortunate, but overall my shot is good, so I can go to the Masters with confidence.”
Schaeffler, who had advanced to the semifinals with five consecutive wins, lost to Burns and failed to advance to the finals for the third consecutive year, and then suffered two consecutive losses in one day, giving up the 3rd and 4th place matches.
The finals ended so quickly that the awards ceremony was held at the 18th hole while the two were playing for 3rd and 4th places.
