In the first inning, Pittsburgh jumped on the board with two home runs. McCutchen led off with a knuckleball that Smiley smashed over the center field fence. Reynolds followed with a single to right field. Cho struck out, but Santana hit Smiley’s sinker for a two-run homer.
The Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the first. Tuckman and Suzuki singled to put runners on first and second. Happ struck out, but Swanson followed with an RBI single, but Morel grounded out to end the threat.
Pittsburgh added a run in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Reynolds doubled and scored on Santana’s RBI single. In the top of the fourth, Hedges came to the plate with the bases loaded and Smiley’s first pitch, a knuckleball, went over the left field fence.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Cubs broke through with a six-run inning. Swanson and Morel led off with back-to-back singles. Mervis singled to left field, but Gomes walked to load the bases. Madrigal then drew a walk to load the bases. It was a pitch clock violation by pitcher Roanci Contreras.
Tuckman then came to the plate. Tuckman lined a single to center field. Morel and Gomes came home. Madrigal advanced to second. Pittsburgh sent Yohan Ramirez to the mound. Ramirez got Horner to fly out to center field, but gave up a single to Suzuki to load the bases. Happ followed with a two-run double. Ramirez was shaken up and walked. Suzuki advanced to third. Swanson followed with an RBI single. The Cubs took a 7-5 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Pittsburgh scored a run. After McCutchen grounded out, Reynolds singled. Cho hit an infield single, and a throwing error by second baseman Horner put runners on second and third. Santana followed with a line drive to left-center field. But center fielder Tuckman made the catch. A sacrifice fly brought in a run. Hayes then struck out to end the threat.
Bae came to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth. However, he was thrown out on a grounder to the second baseman.
In the bottom of the eighth, Texas broke the game open. Tuckman and Horner led off with back-to-back singles. Suzuki followed with an RBI double to center field. Swanson drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Morel flied out to center field, but Suzuki tagged up and took third base. Mancini followed with an RBI single to center field.
Pittsburgh put runners on first and second with no outs in the top of the ninth when pinch-hitter Josh Palacios singled and McCutchen walked, but Reynolds, Cho and Santana were stranded. It ended in a 10-6 Cubs win.
